Shire Park Bowls Club started out as an I.C.I. employees club at Whitwell in Hertfordshire in 1949 moving to the Bessemer Road site in Welwyn Garden City in 1951. During their 30 years as I.C.I (plastics), the honours board boasted a County Treasurer, E.B. Chew from 1958 to 1983, a County President, A.F.Gawler in 1958 who was also treasurer for the E.B.A. from 1959 to 1968. The H.B.A Officers Singles was won by Norman Sheridan in 1985 and by Gordon Price in 1988. In 1989 I.C.I. closed its operations in Welwyn Garden City and a development company took over the site and renamed it Shire Park. The Bowls Club also changed to Shire Park hoping to remain as an amenity for the site along with the recreation club, but this was not to be,and the green was closed down. (it is now part of a car park). From then until the new green was ready the club kept together by playing away matches only. Members rallied round and in 1991 managed to raise enough with a loan or two to purchase a plot of land at Tewin. Thanks go to the following companies for their generous help, I.C.I. Welwyn, I.C.I. Materials, B.A.T., Redland, Brown & Lee, D.S.M., Lane Signs, and the East Herts District Council. However when a request was made for members to add to the fund, only 16 were willing to put up their own money, so a plea went out for help, and the following Bowls clubs are thanked for their generous donations, North Mymms, Abbotts Langley, Laings, Townsend, Owls, Welwyn Garden City and Watford. With the help received those sixteen members began digging and in the driest, hottest summer for decades the turf was laid and Shire Park (Tewin) had arrived. The club house was built with the help of a lottery fund grant and was handed over in June 1999. Our claim to fame so far at this site is the County Triples winners in 1992 by Paul Castle Tom Montgomery and Gordon Price. We have also staged the semi-finals of the "Club 2000"in 2000 and it successor "inter club team ten" in 2001 as well as neutral green stages of several County Competitions. |

Our badge depicts those three stages of our history. The rampant lion with I.C.I. logo (the original), the clover shaped SP, and finally St. Peters church Tewin. |
