NSBL History

The New Surrey Bowls League (NSBL) is a male flat green bowls organisation open to private clubs only.   It was formed primarily to provide more competitive and attractive inter-club matches than were then available from existing bowls leagues and bowling association matches in the North and East Surrey areas.

The inaugural meeting of the NSBL took place at Malden BC in October 1995 and was attended by the 8 founding private outdoor bowls clubs.  By the start of the first season (1996) 3 additional clubs had joined.   This has now expanded to the following 16 member clubs.

Activities

Currently the NSBL runs the following :

·           Fours League played on weekend afternoons, each match comprising 4 rinks.

·           Triples League played on weekday afternoons, each match comprising 3 triples.

·           Top Ten knockout competition comprising one Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours playing simultaneously on the same green.

·           Ron Willson Triples knockout competition comprising one rink home / one rink away triples, both rinks playing simultaneously.

In both the Fours and Triples Leagues all clubs play each other once per season.

Geography.

There is no defined geographical boundary for clubs eligible to play in the NSBL as long as they're located within the Surrey or South / South West London areas.   In practice its doubtful that sufficient support would be forthcoming for approval of new membership applications received from clubs much further afield than current club locations due to the prohibitive travelling times in today’s congested traffic conditions.   The most far-flung clubs presently are Magdalen Park to the North, Dorking to the South, Malden to the West, and Old Coulsdon to the East.

Representation and Management.

All clubs are required to appoint one Delegate to the NSBL to actively represent their club at meetings, usually 3 / 4 Committee Meetings per year plus the AGM.   The winners of the weekend Fours League host an annual Presentation Evening, usually in February, at which all members clubs are expected to attend.

The 3 Officers are elected by all the club delegates to carry out management of the NSBL.   These are the Chairman, Secretary, and Press Officer.   The Treasurer’s role is combined with one of these positions.

Written applications to join have to be received by the League Secretary at least 2 months before the AGM held in October each year.    30% or more of the current NSBL club members voting against at an AGM is sufficient to reject club applications to join the NSBL.   The maximum number of new clubs admitted to the NSBL is set at 2 per season.

Match meals and refreshments are mutually agreed between clubs as are the charges made for them.

No green fees are chargeable for any NSBL match.

Finals Day for the two competitions is held on a neutral green of a member club normally in the morning of the 3rd Sunday in September, a buffet lunch being provided out of NSBL funds for all players and match officials.

Although not enshrined in the NSBL Constitution the general agreement of the current Member Clubs is to limit participation in each of the Triples and Fours leagues to 16 clubs.   Originally an agreed condition of membership was that all NSBL member clubs must participate in the weekend Fours League.   However, this condition was subsequently relaxed due to the difficulty encountered by some clubs to consistently field 4 rinks in the weekend Fours League.

For the 2008 season there are 12 clubs playing in the Triples League and 13 clubs in the Fours League.   All clubs except Dorking will play in the two competitions.

Applications For Membership.

Membership applications from competitive progressive private clubs in Surrey and South / South West London are always welcomed.   If your club is interested in joining the NSBL please feel free to contact any of our League Officers whose contact details are on the Club Delegates page of this website.
