Information about Checkley Bowls Club

History: Formed in the year 2000 when Mr. Malcolm Barrett owner of Blythe Business Park offered the use of the Crown Green to Checkley Parish for outdoor play. The indoor Club declined and a new club led by Peter Shingler, Brian Prosser and Ron Somerfield got the club up and running. Additional to the board were added Betty Wain, Friendly Sec. and Basil James Club Captain.

The Club participate with the Uttoxeter League in Division 3 with two teams. The A Team is working it’s way to the top of this Division and prospects look good for 2004. A new Vet’s League begun this year also has A & B Teams participating on Tuesday afternoons.

The Club believes in keeping up a good social side of “Friendly Bowling” and so over 20 friendly matches are arranged each season. Merit Competitions: these are games arranged within the club each year for Ladies and Gent’s Singles, Doubles, Mixed and and an Open and the winners names are put on the Club Board.

New Members are always welcome and there is a very nice Clubhouse with all facilities and tea and biscuits “free” for everyone playing. A wonderful sport to take up with fresh air, exercise and new friends!

For further information contact the Secretary Ron Somerfield for an application form or contact Betty Wain on email:betbobwain@aol.com or by telephone 01538 722944.
